The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish

If you love a twisty tale of love, lust, money, murder, booze and betrayal, then The Other Passenger is the book for you. Louise Candlish has curated a clever novel that had me on the edge of my seat throughout the read.

The story starts a couple of days after Christmas when two detectives, Parry and Merchison, come to question Jamie Buckby about the disappearance of his friend and fellow commuter, Kit Roper. Jamie is supposedly the last person to have seen Kit alive after they shared drinks and a heated altercation. The plot transitions between the periods of Christmas and New Year of 2019 with flashbacks to January 2019 when the pair first met via their wives, Claire Buckby and Melia Roper. They all seem to get along well, having double dates, working together and travelling to and from work together. However, as Jamie starts funnelling lie after lie in his narration, we wonder how honest he truly is.

Candlish did an incredible job creating intrigue and mystery throughout the novel. She left some breadcrumbs along the way but not enough to really prepare you for the ending. Her story was very over the top and I loved how all the characters were fleshed out and developed in their own unique way.

The traits, personas and actions of the characters were quite unlikeable, but the greed, envy and betrayal between them made this an addictive read which I finished in just a few hours. I loved how we learnt more about the dynamics of and between the characters to the past and present.

As a reader, you definitely need to pay attention to each of the pages to clue in on what's happening. I enjoyed trying to crack the case before it was revealed to me but was still left surprised by the ending itself. You'll definitely be asking yourself, 'wait, what did I just read?' but you'll love finding out the truth, even though it's quite twisted in the end.

The Other Passenger was certainly an exceptionally twisted little thriller and totally loved it! I am keen to pick up more from Louise Candlish and be completely left in shock by her creativity.
