Well, where do I start with this book? I read this book in one sitting and I am glad that I invested two hours in this book where I laughed and cried. Women Don't Owe You Pretty is such a refreshing and vital piece of text to add to your self-love journey. Florence Given bravely discusses topics such as sexism, homophobia, ableism, self-love, setting boundaries and much more.
This book is definitely an acquired taste and I suggest that unless you are open for criticism and challenges to your own norms, stereotypes and views, then don't pick this book up. As a reader, I didn't agree with all that Given had to say and expressed in her writing. I can respect her views but I also don't have to compromise mine to agree with her.
‘maybe I’m “TOO MUCH”, maybe my abundance reminds you that you are lacking.’
I loved how the book was structured into short chapters. The chapters are titled as challenges to a common stereotype or a task to help resolve a trait which may be doing more harm than good. And I am totally here for it. The title gives you a clear insight about what this chapter is about and almost sums the message of it. As the reader, it makes it easier to navigate the book and go back and find sections which resonate with the reader.
The pages are also beautifully accompanied by empowering and diverse illustrations of women living their good life. You can truly feel Given's passion in her words and it will feel like her advice is coming to you from a big sister. She has a strong perspective on feminism and offers the opportunity for us to have these critical conversations.
I do wish a book like this was available to me in high school whilst growing up. This book is all about self- love and being proudly and uniquely you.
I felt that it was easy to get lost with airbrushed images and brands profiting by drowning out the true worth of women and young girls. The concepts in this book are things I have learned over the last few years and I am glad that a text like this exists for young girls now.
I think this book is surely a must read. There are concepts and chapters which are valuable to all, feminist or not. Women Don't Owe You Pretty is a great book for young women trying to find their voice in a world where it can be drowned out and Florence Given has created a book which truly highlights that feminists don't hate men, but just want one and all to be equal.
