Can I just start off by saying that a book reads so much better when the author has personally signed a copy for you? Yes! Lynette Noni personally signed a copy of the Prison Healer for me! And I am completely fan-girling over my copy!
But besides this, The Prison Healer is truly a gripping, gut-wrenching and exciting book and the perfect way to start a new series. Lynette Noni is an Australian author who has created this enthralling new series which I would recommend for anyone seeking a new fantasy fiction read (or three as this is a trilogy).
An apothecary nurse, Kiva has been imprisoned in Zaladov for over ten years. She has been locked away at the age of seven and after her father's death took over his duties as The Prison Healer. Although she has suffered at the hands of both the guards and other prisoners, she makes it her duty and purpose to care for all with the same empathy. An untraceable and non-diagnosable sickness begins to spread throughout the prison, whilst Kiva faces elemental trials to save a new patient known as the Rebel Queen and gain hers and her close companions freedom.
Much of the story does take place inside the prison, making the novel emotionally dense.
Each of the supporting characters bring and hold their own in the story and as a reader we can surely find something to love about all of them. While facing different ordeals, each character finds comfort and support with another, and the connections made are true and everlasting. But things, of course, are not as clear as they seem.
I loved that this book had a young adult female protagonist. Kiva's personality is layered, caring and thoughtful but she holds her own and uses her mind rather than heart to make decisions. But as a healer she thinks scientifically with her heart also.
Noni has beautifully crafted the Kingdom of Wenderall and its stunning elemental magic.
The story is cleverly crafted and the plot entices the reader to continue reading. I am so glad that the second book released just six months after this first one and I am keen to dive into the second book soon (and the third after that).
The Prison Healer is an incredible start to what will surely be a heart-pumping and suspenseful trilogy. Lynette Noni has me hooked on this trilogy and this has convinced me to read some of her prior works too.
Completed on: 12th October 2021
Trigger Warning: The book contains graphic violence, abuse of prisoners, allusions to rape, child abuse, self-harm and other triggering topics.
